The S&P 500 gave up a near 2% gain to dip into the red before a late lift helped the broad market measure book its first gain in one week. Stocks had entered the holiday weekend with five straight losses, or a weekly decline of 5%, so bargain hunters stood ready at this session's open to bid stocks sharply higher.
